Department of Design

The Department of Design provides education of designers in the design study program. It offers education in bachelor and master study in full-time form and in doctoral study in full-time and part-time form. Education is concentrated in four specialized studios, three of which focus on 3D design and one on the design of visual communication. In addition to this, the Department also offers a wide range of required and elective courses in the study of Design, which can also be taken by students of other study programs at the Faculty of Arts.

Main Studios of the Department of Design:

  • Foundations of Design Studio
  • Industrial Design Studio
  • Innovation Design Studio
  • Space Design Studio
  • Visual Communication Design Studio

The teaching aim of the Foundations of Design Studio is to introduce students to the issue of solving technology-related design problems and to encourage students to understand design through an interdisciplinary approach. Assignments are designed to enable students to clarify their understanding of the relationship of form to function, to determine the semantic relationships at play within a product, and to use the optimal means of creative expression in devising individual design solutions for simple products.

Head of Studio:
doc. Ing. Dušan Šuch, PhD.

Senior Lecturer:
Mgr. art. Mária Bujňáková, ArtD.

  • Industrial Design Studio

Studio teaching leads the graduate to the independence of his design work, while solving simple and complex design projects of machines, equipment and other technical items that are industrially manufactured. Students are encouraged to develop timeless design concepts, taking into account technical and technological trends as well as new scientific knowledge. Teaching is aimed at creating conditions for the development of artistic and technical creativity of students, in expanding knowledge in the field of humanities, natural sciences, technical sciences and other scientific disciplines. The assigned design tasks are designed with the aim of applying the creative imagination of students, demolishing the stereotypes of thinking and gradually acquiring creative professional intuition and graduate habits.

Head of Studio:
doc. Ing. Peter Wohlfahrt, ArtD.

Senior Lecturer:
Ing. Eduard Weiss, ArtD.

  • Innovation Design Studio

The aim of study in the Innovation Design Studio is the solving of various design problems, which are encountered in everyday life. Students are also offered the opportunity to carry out design research. In their analysis of each problem, students are led to experiment with materials, technologies, and the practical and aesthetic function of the product so that these elements could be influenced and the result, in the form of innovative design, can be obtained by applying theoretical and practical knowledge, skills and the stimulation of both rational and emotional levels of solutions. Innovation is not only understood in the context of formal originality and the uniqueness of the product, but also in terms of function and the use of traditional and modern technologies and materials.

Head of Studio:
prof. Ing. Tibor Uhrín, ArtD.

Senior Lecturer:
Mgr. art. Pavol Capik, ArtD.
Mgr. art. Mária Bujňáková, ArtD.

Doctoral student:
Mgr. art. Patrik Knoblich

  • Space Design Studio

The studio provides a space for the practical application of creative, rational and emotional thinking and for discussion and criticism. The aim of the studio is to develop the principles of creating interior and exterior spaces from individual units up to larger complexes and through assignments to provide strong foundations for students in the creation of interior or exterior environments of different purposes and for different target groups. Students will learn to consider the relationship of users of spaces with individual elements of the space with an emphasis on fostering an integrated character, appearance and function of the environment and influencing the perception of the space, in addition to considering contemporary trends, technologies and materials.

Head of Studio:
Ing. arch. Tomáš Boroš, ArtD.

Senior Lecturer:
Mgr. art. Michaela Bujňáková, ArtD,
Mgr. art. Rastislav Jurčík, ArtD.

  • Visual Communication Design Studio

The Visual Communication design studio is dedicated to the creation of visual codes for a modern world, a world that is characterized by the dynamic evolution of means of visual communication. Technology and equipment change at an extraordinary fast pace, but this is also the case with the means of expression, signs and symbols that we use. What do not change, however, are compositional principles, understandings of typography and colour and the need to adhere to a hierarchy of information. In the Visual Communication studio, students should come to understand the wider contexts of visual and graphic communication and learn to cooperate with other related disciplines. Communication design is focused on the demands of modern practice to ensure that graduates are capable of working flexibly, either individually or within the team-based environment of a graphic design studio or an advertising agency. The goal is to draw students to an appreciation of individual details, which they then integrate, into a greater whole in such a way that they can understand the concept of a unified visual style. The result of the program should be graduates who are capable of designing not only corporate identities for companies, but also entire advertising campaigns and the design of ranges of packaging. The studio places great emphasis on creative and unorthodox solutions while maintaining artistic quality and ensuring the production of work, which meets the requirements of the professional environment and the principles, defined through historical contexts, craftwork and tradition.

doc. Mgr. art. Andrej Haščák, ArtD.
